SERDANG, July 23 - University Putra Malaysia Hospital Lecturer's has taken the initiative to give awareness on medical law and practice in Malaysia by organizing the HPUPM Talk # 6: Medical Law and Practice Today: An Overview of What Healthcare Professional in HPUPM Need to Know . The program attended by 132 staff of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and HPUPM has provided exposure on the concept of medical law in Malaysia. It also serves as a platform for discussions on issues related to medical rules and regulations and ways to address relevant issues.
Program was started with the topic of "An Overview of Medico-legal Cases in Malaysia" by speakers from the Attorney-General's Chambers, Mrs. Asliza Ali. She describes cases related to medical law in Malaysia and provides guidance to medical staff to avoid or handle cases related to this medical law.
The program continues with the second topic of "Common Issues That Can Lead to Medical Ligitation" from Professor Dr. Princess Nemie Jahn Kassim, Civil Law Lecturer, International Islamic University. The talk provided by the speaker has opened the participants minds of the usual issues brought to court related to routine work of healthcare professionals.
Given the topic "Medicolegal Issues and Its Implication towards Medical Curriculum" to be discussed, Professor Dr. Lim Thiam Aun, FPSK Medical Lecturer shares the experience in effective teaching for students in clinical field related to medical law and regulations. He also gave some suggestions and guidance to clinical lecturers in ensuring students understand the importance of medical legislation.
The program ended with a speaker from Melaka-Manipal Medical College, Professor Dato 'Dr. NKS Tharmaseelan, also known as The "Lawyer Doctor", describes the topic of "Good Practices to Keep the Lawyer Away". He shared some good practices to be practiced among healthcare professionals and attracted participants to practice in the future.
Each topic presented has provided awareness to all participants to prepare themselves and to work with full commitment when in the medical field. It is hoped that this program will be the starting point for the faculty and hospital staff to work in HPUPM later.
